Social Exchange Theory

I believe the Social Exchange Theory best represents marriages and families in the United States. This theory states that individuals are rational beings and make decisions based on costs and benefits. There are so many marriages that end in divorce as well as many marriages that do not end but are not necessarily healthy marriages. Due to this, I think when people are in a marriage and are unhappy, they weigh out the negatives and positives of either ending the marriage or working it out. In some situations, getting a divorce may be a better solution for a particular couple, while staying together and working things out may work much better for another couple. Every choice made by an individual is made based on how it will personally affect them as well as their family. The image I chose depicts a woman who looks as if she is deeply thinking about something that is causing her distress. I believe this is a feeling most if not all would feel if the decision of divorce was on their mind.
