Avoidant Style & Storge

A Walk to Remember is about two people who have completely different lives, but they end up falling for each other in the end. Shane West plays a tough guy in the movie and Mandy Moore plays an innocent church girl. Shane asks Mandy for help with his school studies and that is when they started to hang out more and got to know each other. He saw the best in her when all the other kids made fun of her. In the end they fell in love and he realized she was sick.

This would be a good example of the "avoidant style" theory. Mandy's character is often shy and uncomfortable being around others. She finds it hard to trust people easily. It took her a long time to even realize that she had feelings for Shane's character. It was not until he confronted her that she finally gave in.

This would also be a good example of Lee's styles of Love regarding "storge" love. They became friends first without having an initial physical attraction. After spending a lot of time together, they had a mutual trust between themselves. Love developed slowly for them and they had a lot of respect for each other despite their differences. They found contentment in one another's company.

Lee's Styles of Love/Macro-Level Theory

Crazy/Beautiful is a movie about a guy and a girl who meet in high school and fall in love.  When they begin falling in love, they both face obstacles due to the difference in their social backgrounds.  The girl is white and upper-class and the boy is hispanic and of lower-class.  They also have many differences in their personality: the girl is wild and crazy and the guy is very down to earth, calm, and responsible.  Even though their worlds seem to clash, they both sacrifice things in their lives for each other.

I feel this movie is a great example of Agape love from Lee's Styles of Love, which is altruistic love that is patient and self-sacrificing.  The reason is because of the fact that both the guy and the girl in the movie sacrifice things in their lives for the love they have for each other.  The guy sacrifices responsibilities of his education and family just so that he can be with the girl he is in love with and be able to take care of her and help guide her in her life.  He is also very patient with the difficult situations that the girl he is in love with faces with her family.  The girl sacrifices what people think of her dating someone of lower-class.

I also feel this movie is an example of Macro-Level Theory, which is when society controls the development of love.  Even though these characters in the movie do not constitute for the actual love developing that society controls, it does show how society can control it.  In the movie, both the guy's mother and the girl's father are trying to restrict each other from seeing each other.  The mother tries to get her son to date a neighbor's daughter that she has known her whole life and who is from the same class background.  The father is also trying to control who his daughter develops any love with by trying to forbid her from seeing the hispanic guy.

The movie Obsessed is a movie about a loving couple who's relationship gets overshadowed by the husband's co-worker. The co-worker
technically bases a kiss as means for a fictitious relationship. In this relationship she basically believes that her love is corresponded and that the husband doesn't love his wife. This woman has a crazy obsessive attraction for the man and goes as far as to wanting to kill the wife.

Lee's Styles of Loving
-Lee's styles of loving, suggest that love has various styles of showing its self. One of the styles of loving that Lee presents, can be seen in the movie "Obsessed." The style shown here is that o f Mania which is a crazy obsessive love. The person feels that they have to have total possession of the other person and can go up to the point where they make up relationships out of simple gestures such as a smile or a kiss.

Steinberg's Triangular Love Theory
-We can also see the presence of Steinberg's Triangular Love Theory. The love that the character feels for the man can be seen as a consummate love but in reality the relationship between both characters is non existent making this "relationship" if any, into a non-love triangular theory. This is when one or both people in the relationship do not have either, passion, commitment or intimacy. Therefore there is a non existent relationship.

Statistical Discrimination

USUAL WEEKLY EARNINGS OF WAGE AND SALARY WORKERS
FOURTH QUARTER 2011

Among the major race and ethnicity groups, median weekly earnings for black men working at full-time jobs were $660 per week, or 75.8 percent of the median for white men ($871). The difference was less among women, as black women's median earnings ($601) were 84.8 percent of those for white women ($709). Overall, median earnings of Hispanics who worked full time ($537) were lower than those of blacks ($621), whites ($786), and Asians ($880).

This statistic was located on the Bureau of Labor Statistics website and was posted on January 24, 2012.

Discrimination is exemplified in this statistic because it shows the inequality in income by both race and gender. This racial and gender inequality in income is due to relative deprivation from statistical and institutional discrimination. Institutional discrimination is inequality that is integrated into policies, such an in organizations or corporations. Statistical discrimination is unfair treatment of an individual based on race or gender. This is due to people accepting stereotypes of a race or gender and assuming that the individual has those characteristics as well. This is portrayed in the picture that I have selected. The picture shows a minority woman observing a white woman being promoted by her also white superior. The woman looks frustrated and is saying “How come she got promoted after a week, when I’ve been here a year?” I think that this is a perfect depiction of statistical discrimination. The minority woman is most likely not being promoted due to the white managers stereotype of her race. He may assume that she has similar characteristics to other people of her race and he chooses instead to promote the new white female employee.
Prejudice is  still a very serious  problem in our society. The color of your skin  and your gender determines many of the opportunitioes that are given and taken away from you in your life. Acoording to the Centers for Desease Control  and Prevention, 30.4% of Hispanics, 17% of blacks, and 9.9% of whites do not have health insurance coverage in the United States. and According to the Unted States Department of Labor "In 2010, the rates for Black men and women were 18.4 and 13.8 percent, respectively.  The jobless rate for Hispanic men was 12.7 percent, and the rate for Hispanic women was 12.3 percent. In comparison, the unemployment rate for White men was 9.6 percent, and the rate for White women was 7.7 percent. The unemployment rates for Asian men and women were 7.8 and 7.1 percent, respectively." As we can see race and gender still has a very big impact on the opportunities we have in life. Minorities in our country still have a harder time finding employment and having access to health care.

Stereotypes are a set of beliefs that oversimplifies a group of people. It is very common to not stereotype other people in society because of race, gender, and class. It is represent widely in the United States and its inevitable for people to avoid these beliefs. Statistically women are more likely to be stereotyped than men. 8 out of 10 women are more likely to call into a category  of stereotypes.  Every race at least of some set of stereotypes that people judge them on.  8 out of 10 people who are ages 21 and below are more likely to be stereotyped. Stereotypes are all around us and it is something that we can't control anymore.

Gender discrimination

In our society we face this divide between women and men in the work area. Especially in pay, promotions, hiring and opportunities overall. Gender discrimination being the unequal and unfair treatment of two specific different genders because of physical differences. Within pay women get around 77 cents to a mans dollar. Also in the issue of promotions we rarely see women in higher portions in the work force because of either attachments to home life because they need To take care of their family. Overall opportunity levels for men and women for certain jobs are just unequal because men are seen to be physically stronger and more reliable. This divide in the work force toward women is oppressing towards them and is unequal.

Individual Discrimination

This statistic cam out August 25, 2010
The proportion of the population employed in 2009—the employment-population ratio—was 19.2 percent among those with a disability, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The employment population ratio for persons without a disability was 64.5 percent. The unemployment rate of persons with a disability was 14.5 percent, higher than the rate for those with no disability, which was 9.0 percent

Many disabled people who are qualified for employment opportunities are turned down frequently. While many of people with disabilities have one or a couple impairments, they all have their individual strengths just like people without disabilities. The photo above shows a woman in an interview. The interviewer must have implied verbally or non-verbally that the interviewee's disability is a deal breaker, which is why the interviewee is defending her right to be employed. Thus, the photo exemplifies Individual Discrimination.
