The theory that I think best helps explain marriage and family is the Ecological Perspective. This theory explains what families and marriages go through and what they experience daily. This perspective helps us understand the relationship between individuals and the social environment. The five systems which inlcude: micro(family, work, friends), meso(interaction between micro-system), external(individual does not experience directly but can affect their development), macro(laws, policies, culture, norms) and chrono(over time) system involve such institutions and surroundings that affect the human behaviors and attitudes towards certain things. All these systems influence on the way individuals think for themselves and therefore affects on how they view things in their marriage and with their families. For example, If a law is implemented and one of the parents is fired from their job or have problems in the workplace, it might take a negative effect and put stress on the marriage and family overall.
