Individual Discrimination

In Exploring Marriages & Families, Karen Seccombe defines individual discrimination as "one person exhibiting a negative behavior towards another person" (Ch. 2, p. 51).  It is important that in society we recognize this problem and raise awareness so that people are not acting on their individual discrimination.  Many hate crime incidents have been a result of this and over the years, there has been a rise in anti-hispanic hate crime incidents against immigrants.  The Leadership Conference published an online article stating that reported hate crimes against Hispanics have risen from 423 in 2003 to 595 in 2007 and that it is in correlation to debate on the Comprehensive Immigration Reform ("The State of Hate: Escalating Hate Violence Against Immigrants").  This shows how negatively people are affected by individual discrimination.  This picture I chose to represent this statistic on discrimination is to raise awareness about individual discrimination and to show that hate crimes are actually illegal crimes.
