Parenting styles

Baumrind provides three different types of parenting styles: authoritative, permissive, and authoritarian. Authoritative parenting style is demanding has high control over children, but at the same time these parents are flexible,  warm , and receptive. Permissive style illustrates parents that are lenient with few demands or controls over their children. Last, but not least is authoritarian parenting style, now this depicts strict demanding parents that are punitive and not warm.

Kohn provides 2 types of parenting styles: conformity and self direction. Working class parents valued conformity in thir childrn becasue it is ideal for the type of job thy would have. Higher class parents valued creativity and self direction qualities where as parents provided basic needs, but encouraged their children to be curios and develop their own sense of self control.

Lareau also provides two types of parnting styles. Concerted cultivation and accomplishment of natural growth. Econmic class plays a part in what a parent can offer their chidren. Parents with high econmic standing can provide for a child to live in a good area, attend a good school, pay for extracurricular activities, and etc. therefore, development is cultivated. On the other hand parents from lower economic tanding can not affor as much as a result, their is great concern with their childs interets and abilities, development arises spontaneously.

I think Baumrind authoritative style of parenting is the best one out of the other styles of parenting becuase it does not necessarily emphasize on class or status that parents may have. This kind of parenting style is not too lenient and not too strict and is demanding and maintains high levels of control, but is still flexible with their children. They guide their children with compassion while also setting the limits. I believe children need to have control and discipline, but they also need caring, responsive parents that will compromise with their children.

  1. Melissa, you need to compare styles of Baumrind to those of Kohn and Lareau.
