Parenting Styles

Kohn provides two types of parenting styles: self-direction and conformity. Children who come from working class family backgrounds experience strict supervision, routine, and they have to learn how to work with a group of people. While on the other hand self-direction relates to children who come from high socio-economic backgrounds. Their parents encourage reasoning, curiosity, and the development of self-control.

Baumrind provides three types of parenting styles: authoritarian, permissive, and authoritative.
Authoritarian parents have high demands and have low response levels for their children and they often use punishment. For example Chinese culture is not individualist children have to obey their parents. Permissive parents give their children a lot of freedom and they let them do whatever they want with little or no regulations. Authoritative parents are highly in control and highly responsive they pay attention to their children and they have a great deal of expectations for them.

Lareau provides two types of parenting styles: concentrated cultivation and accomplishment of natural growth. Concentrated cultivation parents nurture and consider their children’s abilities and they look out for their child’s best interest. Parents provide their children with accomplishment of natural growth such as they provide them with food and shelter and the necessary means in order for them to grow healthy.

When I have children of my own I would love to be an authoritative parent because I want to be in control of them but at the same time I would want to give the liberty to explore their options and accomplish their dreams without me intervening in their lives.
